Sacred Music

The Anthologion (Opus 0) is a continuing anthology of sacred Orthodox Christian hymns drawn from the Church’s liturgical tradition. This anthology is intentionally open. It is maintained as a live file: as new hymns are prepared, new pages are added, and the collection is periodically reissued and updated.

In the Orthodox understanding, liturgical music is not meant to display the music itself, but to let the humble beauty of sung prayer serve the worship of the Church: supporting the words, guiding the people, and helping the heart attend to God. Many of my favourite composers have contributed to this practice, and I count it a blessing to have even a small opportunity to add my voice within the liturgical space. The hymns in this volume are not organized strictly in the chronological order of the liturgical cycle; some may appear more than once, with different musical settings and with their appointed church “tones” (echoi). Where relevant, indications will be made for the intended use. If you wish to request alternate tone settings, or ask for another language edition (using an approved text tradition), please contact me and I would be very happy to help!
